Persica vs Pavonia - 1894
Yellowish-green opal ground with spreading violet; gold painting in relief.
Note:
For years the examples shown here have been labeled "Persica" in various Loetz publications. An example of this decor was first published in 1989 on page 68, plate 15 in 'Lötz Böhmisches Glas 1880-1940' by Helmut Ricke". This same example was published again in 'Loetz Bohemian Glass 1880-1940' by Jan Mergl, Ernst Ploil and Helmut Ricke, English edition published in 2003 by Neue Galerie and depicted on page 287, A13, as "Persica". However, based on a contemporary report by the Centralblatt in 1894 describing the Loetz glasses exhibited at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (S.481 ff), with Pavonia being described as "heliotrope on a yellow translucent ground" and Persica being described as "roth/red", these decor name assignments would appear to be reversed.
